One Good Thing (OGT) is a brand of sustainable protein snacks out of the UK that claims to be the world’s first wrapper-free snack.
Inspired by the sight of all the discarded wrappers alongside the road during a countryside bike ride, OGT went to work on developing a coating that keeps the protein snacks safe, clean, and edible. The layer that replaces the wrapper gets made from natural ingredients, including beeswax, and after a quick rinse, the bars can be eaten as-is.
“There was a lot of trial and error when it came down to creating the coating as there were so many variables to consider, and each one presented a new challenge,” says Daniel Bedford, head of business development for One Good Thing. “Factors we had to consider included things like shelf life, nutrition, and being able to wash it without it changing the texture and going soggy. We also had to ensure the coating wouldn’t dry out and become too brittle, as it needed to be practical for real-world uses, such as people putting it in their pockets, bags, or lunch boxes. Sustainability is huge for us; we weren’t willing to compromise on using renewable, low-carbon, and 100% natural ingredients – being able to claim our coating is 100% natural is very important.”
The branding identity comes courtesy of the design studio This Way Up. OGT’s packaging is plastic-free—obviously—and the only conventional packaging is the six and twelve boxes. The cardboard boxes are easily recycled, featuring the same type of playful lettering and graphics found on the edible label.
Interested parties can order One Good Thing’s bars in mix-and-match sets in half or complete dozens directly from the brand’s website.
